how much money for 12 months travel

hi i am leaving in January for hopefully 12 months of travel money allowing, i will be heading to china first and then fly to japan for 2 weeks. i will head back into china and onto Thailand and south east Asia flying out of Singapore i'm looking to be in Asia for around 6 months.
will be then flying into Sydney and spending 2 months on the east coast. i then fly to new Zealand where i will hopefully be for 2 months then on north America for a month at the end but that can be cut short.

12,000 GBP divided by 365 days is barely 30 GBP/day.

That's not enough. You can do SE Asia and similar inexpensive destinations on that budget, but not developed countries like Australia, New Zealand, US or Canada.

That said, that's just my opinion and based on how I like to travel. If you're willing to couch-surf and be a really frugal traveller then I suppose it's possible, but it would be my definition of hell on the road. If you can't afford to splurge every now and then - especially for that long period of time - then I think you'll go nuts, or at least get very sick and tired of being so frugal.

Remember though that's just me. I'm more of a high-end flashpacker - not a broke backpacker - so my definition of fun/exiting/fulfilling travel may be much different than yours.

Have fun.

Cheers,
Terry
