Hey travellers
Quite frankly, it's a really, really dumb idea for India - especially for a single woman. Wild camping and hitchhiking is NOTHING like Europe.
Safe, secure, perfectly acceptable accommodation is super inexpensive and easily available almost anywhere... there are huge areas of India - especially in some of the most interesting bits - where it would be almost impossible for you to find a safe, private little place to wild camp... public transport is very affordable and goes almost anywhere - hitchhiking as a single foreign woman would be a nightmare...
Honestly, do some proper research. India has received hordes of foreign budget travellers for a loooong time... the guide books are excellent and there are loads of great travel forums that are specific to India.
Have fun.
Cheers,
Terry
Hey,
I as an Indian subscribe to Terry's views. It certsinly is not safe for White woman to be by herself in forests in India. What with the Indian Government yet to overcome the problem of poachers in forests. The Indian forests have numerous incidents of poaching of wild animals for skins, tusks, horns etc. There are also frequent incidents of illegal felling of trees for wood. So one would expect that camping out alone in an Indian forest, there is every possibility of confrontation with anti social elements. Anything could happen then.
But There are Wild life sanctuaries in India with dormitories / rooms etc. at extremely affordable rates. I stay close to Jim Corbett Tiger sanctuary. I find a lot of westerners visiting the place but no one camps out in the wild.
Instead of camping out in virgin unprotected forests which is not a wise decision, try staying in / near a Govt declared sanctuary and go for treks in nearby.
Any additional information you seek will be gladly provided.
Take Care
Have fun
