I think Melbourne is the great destination in OZ. I had visited OZ in last summer vacation with my friends and was great experience.

How long are you going away for? Have you checked out ant group tours? I did an 18 day group tour last yeat in Thailand and ir was amazing and I met some new friends for life. So I am thinking I might do the same in oz. I have found one for a week, which woulf hopefully let me get to know folk and maybe find a travel companion.

Melbourne sounds like a good place to start. I dm also thinking about visiting Perth and Darwin!

In terms of diversity there is more to see in NZ, so if coming to both don't think you need more time for Oz than NZ... Backpacker type tours are a great way to make new friends without blowing the budget... Places to see in NZ:

Te Papa (Wellington)
Marlborough (Wine)
Kaikora (Whale watch)
Christchurch (Earthquake damaged)
Queenstown (You will need at least a week here)
