Dude,
Thurso is the place you want to go, pretty much the furthest place North, except for John O'Groats.
If you need a hotel, I can recommend some for you.
You will love it up there, no tourists and real Scotland with scenery and views to die for.
Cheers,
Kev
Where have you booked your flight to? Near a city is useful as it will give you more things to do as well as enjoying the peace of a quiet town. Edinburgh and St Andrews are both nice places to visit. Peebles is a nice place to visit or stay while you're here. It's about 45 min from Edinburgh but offers some nice views out in the country.
There are any number of possibilities but if your project concerns your own heritage, presumably you want to be somewhere in that area. If you let me know which area you want to be in and, as somebody else has asked, where you are landing, I could probably be more helpful.
Practically anywhere other than Edinburgh should be pretty free of tourists in November.
Just looked up Thurso... it looks beautiful. although it might be kind of far. Im flying into glasgow so im trying to stay somewhere thats not more than 2 hours from there.
Peebles looks really nice as well thanks for the suggestions.
When looking up my family name i found that the duart castle on the isle of mull is the ancestral home of the clan MacLean. I thought that I might like to check that out but i wasnt sure if that is a good place to stay or not. so i could always do a day trip.
im just hoping to find a nice little town with friendly people that i can talk with and hopefully some of them will let me take there picture. i just want to be amerced in the culture.
Hi Brittany
maybe a nice place to visit would be Roslin its where you can visit Roslin chapel it’s the place where the holy grail is that king Richard the Lion heart brought back from the holy lands and the people are friendly and there are the pentland hills where you can walk and also talk to locals and i see someone mentioned Peebles its only 20 minutes from Roslin and its very picturesque also if you need help with accommodations get back to me and happy hunting
Regards
George
Hey
The Isle of Mull is a beatiful rugged Island - I think if thats where your heritage may lie then you can't go wrong heading there.
From Glasgow you can take a direct train to Oban (beatiful train ride) and from Oban you can take a short ferry ride across to Mull.
I stayed at a campsite just beside the port on Mull - you can rent a Shieling, a solid structured tent with gas stove, sink etc for quite cheap and as corny as it sounds, from the campsite to Duart Castle there is a mini locomotive that takes you there.
I could name a few towns that are quaint but Scotlands west coast is so beatiful I think the journey may inspire you even more so. Oban is a pretty little town, it's a port so it caters for tourists though - you would need a car to find somewhere completely non touristy.
Happy travelling
Neil
