Heading to the land Down under in just under 5 weeks!!! Aghhh! Going with a Friend and we have decided to hire a car for a part of our trip to travel up from melbourne to cairns. What advice can you guys give? Im 23 and hold a full uk driving licence for 4 years now. Will i be able to Hire a car out there? My friend is 22 and has been driving for the same amount of time nearly, is she also able to drive? Also when hiring a car are there any hidden charges that we need to look out for? and any other advice that will be usefull is always apprieciated.
One way and with drivers under age 25 means this'll be a quite costly endeavour. Cheapest I can find barely scrapes by under $50/day (with just one driver) for a period of 5 weeks. (Looking at (which doesn't yet include the underage surcharge in its results), Budget and redspot have an underage surcharge of $16.50 per day; the other big companies have surcharges from $22 to $30 per day.) As far as I know, there's no differentiation between ages when you're between 21 and 25, so you're both in exactly the same situation.
Be aware of high collision damage waivers of ~$3000 (meaning that if you're in an accident, that's the amount you'll be liable for; when renting in Europe, this amount tends to be below €500); with it costing another ~$25/day to reduce that to ~$300.
There might be backpacker-oriented car rental companies in Australia nowadays, same as in New Zealand, and if so, those might have better deals for young drivers, but I'm not aware of any such.
is probably one of the biggest backpacker rental companys out there and their standard rental is to anyone over 21. They have some pretty shitty vehicles, but you get a cheap deal and 24hr roadside recovery. And having a breakdown can be all part of the adventure!
Thanks for the tips also would i have to take any paper work with me like my driving licence counter part?
Iv looked into wicked campers, they have a shocking review though, and they where in the news for being dangerous as they arnt kept to standard :S ...but if all else fails then... prehaps lol ... maybe they are better now?
