East Coast - Cairns to Sydney

Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone can give me some advice....my three friends and I will be travelling from Cairns to Sydney in January/Feb 2013. I have been to a few travel agents and talked to them about packages including bus/accommodation/tours etc. We'll be travelling for about three and a half weeks and I've been quoted in and around $2500 - $3200. Does this seem expensive or is it the norm for all inclusive packages??
We are not set on the idea of hop on/ hop off bus tours so if anyone has any advice on whether getting a campervan/car might be a better option, I'd be glad to hear it! Also back-pack/suitcase?? What to pack??

Hi there!

My friend and I are leaving to do the route you are doing in about a months time! We have 22 days to get from Cairns to Sydney, and had booked our flight with an organised tour in mind. However, after booking the flights we found out that they'd discontinued the tour we wanted to do, and all the other options would incur us changing our flights which we were not able/willing to do.

So we decided to plan the route ourselves and I honestly think its worked out all the better! We're still going to be going on some mini tours to places like the Whitsundays and Fraser Island etc, but it's allowed us a lot more freedom about what we want to do and see while we are there. I'd definitely re-consider it if I was you! We've booked the Greyhound Mini Traveller Bus Pass for AU$350 which is pretty reasonable with plenty of options to travel each day.

If you're really not keen on taking the bus though, I'd definitely consider taking a car, but consider the cost of gas/accommodation vs. the bus pass and I think you'd be losing out!

I'm taking a suitcase, and my friend a backpack, so will let you know how we get along!

Nazy xx

Thanks for the reply Nazy! hope you have a great time on your trip! Ill be looking forward to hearing all about it!!

Fuel is very very expensive in OZ so if you are considering taking a car/camper on this route you will really need to work out a good budget. Also if you buy a car in Cairns you will be crossing into NSW which is a different state so you then have the issue of only being able to have the car in NSW for 3 months and you also wouldnt (although some people do on the sly) be able to sell the car outside Queensland.

I agree with Nazy... look into doing as much as you can on your own, its much better in the long run. Bus is what i did and it was perfect!

Good luck!

That's not true at all. Legally if you keep a car that is registered in another state for longer than 3 months, you have to re register it in that state. This is a simple process of taking it for a warrant of fitness at any registered garage. But it is perfectly legal to sell a vehicle in another state than which it is registered. Chances are if you bought a car in Cairns, you can just as easily find one with NSW plates and rego already on it.
