I went about 3 months without working in Oz and started in Sydney too. I'd highly recommend going up the East Coast and making sure you catch Fraser Island (stay with dingos and do it through them). Get up to Airlie Beach and do the Whitsundays. Few decent hostels around there. If you make it up to Cairns and feel like some parties then Asylum hostel is the one for you.
I used a combination of train, greyhound and lift to get up there. I then went on a road trip from Cairns to Darwin which was the best thing I did. Saw things like Litchfield, Elsey, Nitmiluk national parks before doing Kakadu.
So much to do and see mate but East Coast is a backpackers dream, great way to meet friends doing the same thing.

Tasmania- beautiful and unspoilt, the prettiest place in Oz in my opinion.
Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks in NT
Blue Mountains just outside Sydney
Wilson's Prom National Park (Victoria)
The Great Ocean Road
I travelled around on Greyhound mainly, but also took 2 internal flights with Virgin Blue.

There are more beautiful places outside East Coast of Australia. It is harder to get there but its worth it. If budget and time permits, you should try one (if not more) of these places.
Uluru, NT - get up at sunrise for the most breathtaking view ever.
Broome, WA
Karijini National Park, WA
Kangaroo Island, SA
For Melbourne, St Kilda is your backpack heaven. Base in St Kilda seems to be the popular choice. I live near there and there seems to be endless amount of backpackers so you wont be lonely.
Fastest way to get around is by plane. Budget airlines in Australia are Virgin, Jetstar, Tiger Airways. You can sign up for their Friday happy hour for good deals.
