I would fly from Barcelona to Venice. Its a big distance and will save you time and money. When I was in Venice I took the train to Florence. There were people on the train who were headed to Rome. You can do the trip all in one day on train from Venice to Rome.

You do not say when, but you will have several budget airlines to the two closest airports to Venice.

The journey by train Venice to Rome will be a direct journey of less than four hours and perhaps about the same time as a flight by the time you have gone to and from and hung around airports.
