i would like to split your requirements into two parts..
1. Phone: Get a phone that supports data at good speed, has maps and preferably GPS you can save money if you can get a local sim. with data plans available you can us the phone for bank transactions, chatting , and maps. (i used my phone GPS last sat and is impressed with it)
2.Laptop/Tablet: Tablets are great for travelling. uses include maps internet email and as a backup od your memory cards. Ipad is not the only tablet available, there are lots others available. I personally would like to buy a not so expensive one as there are chances of misuse with it. Laptops are better for day to day work. which you may perfer to use after you return from trip.
