If you could only...

...visit 5 places in the world, what would they be?

Assuming somebody else is paying....

- North Korea (my definite #1 travel dream)
- Tristan da Cunha (with Gough & Inaccessible Is chucked in)
- Sokotra
- Antarctica
- Easter Island (probably via Pitcairn....)

1. Antarctica
2. Easter Island
3. Bhutan
4. New Zealand
5. Kenya

Haven't heard of your 2nd and 3rd choices. Where are they located? Why do you want to go to North Korea? Are there outstanding places there?

Tristan da Cunha is in the southern Atlantic Ocean just like the other two islands of Gough and the most perfect name of them all: Inaccessible! Don't you just love a name like that!

Socotra is south of Yemen, of which it is part.

Anyway Gelli, funny you name Tristan da Cunha as it is in my top 5 list as well! Just have a bit of a positive island feaver I guess.

In random order a top 5. Could probably add only islands, but as a mix I add some other places as well.

1. Tristan da Cunha
2. Trip from Reunion to the islands in the southern Indian Ocean: Amsterdam, Crozet, Kerguelen etc, with the Marion Dufresne ship
3. Spotting mountain gorillas in Rwanda, DRC or Uganda
4. Bhutan (join vegasmike!)
5. Ojmjakon in winter

There are dozens of islands I really would like to visit as well, but most of them take lots of money and/or time. The trip Gelli made to St Helena is also great (but no more trips from the UK I noticed, so only from Cape Town). Other islands that are really a dream include Bouvet, but it is less realistically.

Ok, going to dream now

I must admit that Bhutan is probably in my top 5 as well, but just slightly easier to arrange/get to if i had to pay/do it myself, hence i ignored it!

As for North Korea, it has been a semi-obsession of mine for many years. Yes there are some things to see, but I am more fascinated by the experience - the closed country, the way you only see exactly what they want you to see etc, and to see an "old style" communist country before it changes/becomes westernised. Tristan is partly of interest for its remoteness, but partly family reasons (my family is from the St. Helena group, which includes Tristan, and i have cousins who have previously lived there), whilst Sokotra is a relatively new plan of mine and worth reading a little about even if just on Wikipedia (it has huge amounts of plants/flowers/animals etc which exist nowhere else, for example).

Like Utrecht, i could probably just go for small islands: I definitely would not say no to a trip to Kermadoc islands off NZ, for example, or joining Utrecht on his trip around the Indian ocean!

Ahahaha! Yeah Inaccessible is a pretty cool name for an island. Do you need visas to travel to these places? Or special transportation (i.e. private plane/chopper)?

For North Korea it may be worth a google of Lupine Travel; we did Chernobyl with them earlier this year, they specialise in oddball and difficult destinations.

Think you can get to Tristan on the RMS Saint Helena? Other than that I think you'd need a yacht!

My top five wishlist:
Kamchatka - glaciers and volcanoes
Dry Valleys in Antarctica
Torres del Paine
Lofoten islands in Norway
Japan

Top five recommendations:
Taiwan
NZ
Iceland
Sri Lanka
St Petersburg

(Oops this was from a viewpoint where Scotland isn't "travel" as I can hop in a car and go there!)

These places for sure, in no specific order.

1. Brazil
2. Israel
3. Japan
4. Dubai
5. Colombia
