I've been traveling in South Africa and I am next heading to Thailand.
I have decided to go to Indian, Mumbai for 5 days for a gig and need to get a visa? How can I do this?
Can this be done when I arrive? Or does it need to be done before? Ive looked at websites and it states I need to send my passport to them?
Yes of course you need to send them your passport. Did you think they would send you a visa just based on a nice letter! From what I remember, you fill out the application with a photo copy of your passport, then a few days later you have to take your passport in to have the visa attached and then pick it up again in the afternoon. This is if you do the application yourself. There are people in Bangkok that will do the process for you, they require your passport for the whole process.
Yes you can get your visa in Bangkok, but it takes about 6 maybe 7 days to get the visa.

Further to Dodger's advice, as a UK citizen you can't get a visa on arrival in India. (There are only a handful of nationalities that can and this has only been introduced relatively recently). Just make sure you leave as much time as possible when applying for your visa - you never know where Indian bureaucracy might delay things! When I applied in Manchester last year the staff in the VFS office checked through application forms before they were submitted; I've heard of them being returned just because of one small discrepancy or mistake. The photo must also be the correct size and must meet their specified requirements- I assume this will be the case wherever you apply from.

I was a bit confused by his sentence structure too, but I think he means, can he get the visa for India on arrival in Bangkok, not India. Ive applied and got about 4 visas for India from both Thailand and Malaysia and they have always been a pretty easy process with clear instructions on what they want. Of course the benefit of using one of the visa guys in Bangkok is they check everything before you hand it over to them. I figured with the cost of travel back and forth to the visa center, it cost about the same as if I'd used one of the visa guys. I think they can get it through a bit faster too.
