Merpati

Hi, I dont really have a question but I want to warn some people..

Several Indonesian airlines have a poor safety record, and Merpati is probably the best known of this group.

It's not the airline who does the security checks at the airport, it's an independent aviation security firm. In Indonesia, it's done by AvSec which is a government body. You can't carry any kind of knives on board the aircraft. If they confiscate your knife, you won't get it back. This will happen with any airline, not just Merpati. Infact, it's a good thing tht AvSec were doing their job. Although I'm sure you're not a security threat, but would you really want to travel on a plane with someone who's carrying a knife on board?

As far as I understand an employee of AvSec basically stole her swiss knife, as it was in her backpack, not in her hand luggage. I always take sharp things in my backpack and check it in, don't take it with hand luggage.
So the original poster did good but AvSec has some thiefs as employees. Not surprised though as I heard more stories about this happening in Indonesia and many other countries.

One thing though for Fannyvanuijtven, the original poster: you can lock your backpack by buying a cover and using simple locks, either with a key or a number code. Theft can occur still of course, but at least you have proof of it, because they have to break things open. In case you travel to the USA, use TSA approved locks by the way, as otherwise your luggage might be broken open by US customs.
