Budget activities Chang Mai and south east Asia

Hi,
My boyfriend and I are in Chang Mai currently and have spent three days on bangkok. The trains are not running between bangkok and Chang Mai so we had to fly which took a huge chunk from our budget! Now we are worried about money as we budgeted between $1000-1500 aud each per month and want to dive in koh samoi . We have our accomodation booked for a week over full moon and will be booking a trek tomorrow to leave in two days (elephant trekking). Does anyone have any tips on how to save money or any free activities we could be doing in Chang Mai or elsewhere? We are a bit lost!

You could have used a cheap bus between Bangkok and Chiang Mai. A quick Google check would have given you that option.

In Chiang Mai you can sign on to tours through local travel agencies. If you got your tour or trek off the internet you probably paid more than walking into a Chiang Mai travel agency.

Usually the biggest expense is where you stay. Next is if you are big drinkers and eaters who choose expensive pubs or nightclubs. Stay in cheaper places. Eat in cheaper restaurants. You can even buy beer and sandwich fixings in supermarkets.

If you are in Thailand now your hotel prices are going to be higher than during the low season! Close to Christmas and New Years holiday periods is the most expensive time of the year to be in Thailand.

People watching doesn't cost much. Nurse that beer a little longer. Walk more instead of paying for rides. If you are on an open return ticket maybe you have to go home sooner. Maybe get your diving out of the way before you run out of money will be better.

When you use Google and enter "free things to do in Chiang Mai" several links come in. You just have to pick and choose what works. Google is good for "how to get from here to there" type questions. But you always have to weed out the junk.

Your travel guide may give a few hints on what to do cheap.

Does your visa allow you to stay as long as you need or will you have to do a border run?

Good luck.
