I suppose it depends on what information you have available from which to search.
As you've identified, tags and countries are one way to filter your photos, but you can also sort your photos by Title, Mapped location, Upload or Taken date. That won't filter out any photos but it may help you navigate to the image you're looking for, of course depending on the information you already know about the image.
When it comes to the URL, I usually right click in My Photos to open the photo in a new tab. I then right click again and select View Image to bring up the URL.

Try this..
Copy the 'Title' of the photo you are looking for.
Go to you Gallery & mkaes sure all of your photos ( not just the first 100 ) are showing.
Go control F ( or however you do a search ).
Paste the title.
Hopefully that will find you photo.
Or - paste the title into the search function at the top right. You might get a lot & have to find yours.
Hope that helps, but there should be a filter for your Gallery plus your tags (or your anything)

Also, what is the best way of finding the url of a photo? I can go to the blog page and copy that (e.g. http://photos.travellerspoint.com/******/large_dsc11572.jpg) but that is messy. I think that info should be on the edit dialogue from within the control panel, next to the file name.

Try this..
Go to your photos and click on the one you want. That should bring you to the large version of the photo.
Right click & select 'copy image address'
"Paste & match style 'into where ever you want to see the URL.

Thanks for the reply. I eventually found the one I was looking for. There was no tag nor location which means it would never show using the filtering. The filtering is inclusive which means there is no option to search for "No country". I found it by showing all the photos and scrolling down until I found it.
