Me and the girlfriend are Going to the Netherlands and Belgium (mostly Netherlands) for two weeks in mid-August. She is from the area so we'll have plenty of family and friends to visit, but this is my first time there, so I'm going to be a bit of a tourist. What should I absolutely not miss while I'm over there? We'll have a car for about a week, so getting around to smaller places shouldn't be too much trouble.
In Belgium, don't miss Ghent as it's gorgeous. Brussels is worth a day, and many people will probably suggest Bruges but personally I would skip it was I wasn't keen on it at all.
In the Netherlands I'd recommend spending a day or 2 in Utrecht, which is a lovely town and very accessible from Amsterdam.
I echo Ghent - it really is lovely.
