Melbourne March 2015

So I make my first ever solo trip next year, I land in Melbourne without a set in stone plan on the 11th March, not sure how long I will stay there yet but also want to get myself to Sydney before I find myself work (farm work included) and a room to rent, does anyone have any advice regarding wether to pre book hostels and what ones are the best, along with ones to avoid? Then also travel from Melbourne to Sydney? already aware il meet plenty of people along the way but if anyone has the same plans as me, would be good to chat
