some relevant details from the insurance PDS:
We will not pay for:
2. items left unattended in any motor vehicle unless stored in the boot and forced entry is gained.
4. jewellery, camera and video camera equipment, sound equipment, mobile phones, smart phones or laptop and tablet computer equipment left unattended in any motor vehicle at any time (even if in the boot).
5. any amount exceeding $2,000 in total for all items left unattended in any motor vehicle.
7. items left unattended in a Public Place.

Ouch. Can't help you with the insurance issue but your unfortunate predicament serves as yet another reminder to never, ever allow your Passport, important documentation, electronics, etc. to ever leave your direct control when you're on the move.
