Study Abroad, Sydney vs. Melbourne

I'm an American going to Australia next March - June and need help figuring out what the real difference between the two cities is from people who have experience with them. I'm a journalism student and would probably be studying at RMIT or U Melbourne if I go to Melbourne, or UNSW (which I know is in Kensington, so I need help with that too) or U Sydney if I go there. HELP! What is it like to live in these cities?

Hi. I am a Canadian girl who lived in both Sydney (1 month) and Melbourne (3 months). I know everyone has different opinions, but I, without a doubt, liked Melbourne way more than Sydney.

Sydney is very touristy and very new, but is also very beautiful and has some amazing (but busy) beaches. I would say Sydney is less friendly than Melbourne, although both are friendly cities.

Melbourne is much cooler (in my opinion) and a little artsier. It has a nice downtown which is fun to tour, and it seems there is always festivals or something going on. Church/chapel street East of the city is near where I lived, and it was also very cool. It's easy to get around with trams, trains and busses. It also has St. Kilda beach which isn't as nice as Sydney beaches, but still cool.

There are great day trips or weekend trips outside of both cities, but I'd say Sydney probably wins in this category.

Maybe it was just me, but I would hand down say Melbourne!

Great advice . I will keep that in mind when i go to Australia !
