Travel Round South East Asia Summer 2015

Hi, I'm Holly 21 year old student living in the UK looking to travel to S.E Asia this summer between July and beginning of September. I haven't booked flights yet but atm I will be solo travelling. I have heard its really easy to make friends out there but keen to meet/talk to people beforehand in the same boat! Please post if you are interested!

Hey hollie im looking to do the eaxct same thing 😀😃 sooo excited for it 😝👍 thailand looks pretty awesome! What all are you hoping to do?? An what are u looking from ure trip??

There are several posts from women traveling alone to Asia. Take the time to look over some of those posts for helpful hints. Not all countries have the same cost of living. Japan, Singapore, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong will be more expensive than Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Malaysia.

Different countries means different visa requirements, so do some research for that. Where in Asia will you be going? Some tourists buy round trip plane tickets to a big city like Bangkok. Then they go overland to Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia or other nearby countries by cheap discount airlines. (Flying between countries close to Thailand is not that expensive.) Some one way flights from Europe - UK cost almost the same as round trip. Return to your starting point for the flight back home. Compare the cost of round trip vs one way flights. Unless you are going on to some distant country like Australia or NZ.

Make sure your passport has 6 months remaining from when you plan to return home.

You need to work up a budget to see how much money you have available AFTER paying for plane tickets. Having a definite departure date makes it easier to plan a budget out. You don't want to wander around on your own with thousands of pounds in your pocket. Some tourists use debit cards or whatever the same thing is in your country. You do pay a fee to use an ATM but they can be convenient. Don't rely on a single debit/credit card for all of your spending money. That card could be lost or damaged so have back up cards. You must notify your bank that you will be overseas too. Otherwise your ATM withdrawal may not be approved. When making a withdrawal take out the most you can at one time so you don't pay big fees for small amounts. My advice is to NOT use your debit/credit cards for cheap purchases in bars, restaurants or shops to lessen credit card fraud.

You probably won't be able to work legally in these Asian countries without a work permit. So the money you leave home with or have access to via ATM withdrawals is what you live off of.

You will meet other tourists traveling alone. But you must be careful that you don't have everything stolen from you too. Also some guys will want to chat you up, etc. Some are "real friendly" so they can steal you blind or worse. Be careful of some of the people you may meet from back home who want to do dope. Getting caught with dope in Asia is not the same as back home. Some of those countries can execute you or at the very least make your time very unpleasant. Don't get rounded up with the guys who take chances. And always check your bags just in case someone you are traveling with hides their "stuff" in your luggage. (Don't worry you can still have fun but always keep your wits about you!)

Read some of the older posts from solo women travelers. Perhaps you can send a message to some of the women who have returned and ask their advice.

Do a Google search for scams for each country. For some quick advice on "how to get from one place to another" type questions you can start with a Google check.

Have fun but stay safe.
