I'm just back from Mexico - spent 2 weeks going from Mexico to Cancun.
Since I'm not a member of a drugcartel, nor have I been in the sensitive zones, nothing happened to me.
Nothing happened to the tourists I saw either.
post 2 should be removed. something like 3 million tourists go to mexico every year and live through it. the drug wars in mexico are just that drug wars. stay away from drugs and you will be fine. central and south mexico are safer and tourist areas are safe.

Well, if this thread was in the proper place (it should be in the North America forum instead of the Central and South America forum, as Mexico is part of North America), I could remove post #2. I'm sure Cyberia was trying to help, but as Mexico is the #1 tourist country for Americans (even more than Canada or any of the European countries) and has been for the past 30 years, I think the constant media-spun comments on the dangers of travelling to Mexico are way overblown. Yes, there are drug wars--and yes, people die, but this is also true in every country. There are over 1 million people in jail in the US, most of whom are in jail for drug offenses, so we obviously have a drug problem here as well.
I travel to Mexico every year, and have for the past 25 years and I've never had any problems--and I've been all over the country. As long as you stay out of the major drug crime cities (Ciudad Juarez and Laredo and Apatzingan), you should have no issues.

I'm from Mexico and I can tell you that the city has it's issues but its ok, like Calcruzer said there are places, like almost in all countries, that you MUST NOT go.
If you are going to be at Mexico City, you should visit "The Centro Historico" where all our history could be found! There you can visit the ruins of our ancient city: Tenochtitlan, also you can visit Mexico's Cathedral if you like architecture. Also near the "Centro Histórico", are a lot of museums and places of typical food. Eating "esquites" (corn with cheese, chilli and epazote) could be a good experience, maybe you can taste "Tlayudas" and eat some "nopales". And also don't forget to eat "Tacos al pastor", a mexican classic. These could be on a single or maybe a pair of days. Also there you can go and visit "The Alameda (Beautiful park)" and the palace of "Bellas Artes".
Another place you can visit is the "Museo Nacional de Antropología", where you can learn a lot of Mexico's culture. Near there you can visit "Chapultepec" a lung of Mexico city, a great park where you can relax, run or even going to the zoo. Also ther is the "Castillo the Chapultepec" another historic and beautiful place.
Another place is the "Mexican Venice", Xochimilco. Water gardens where you travel along the "chinampas" and eat, drink and sing with mariachi, watching birds and flowers through the "rivers".
And if you have the chance, you need to go to Teotihuacan, near the city (about 1hr) and meet one of the greatest temples and ruins that are on Mexico center area.
Near Cancún there is "Cozumel", a beautiful Island where more ruins could be find. If you go there, you must go to eat-dinner-party to "Money Bar", a beautiful bar near the beach where you can saw beautiful late afternoon.
Also you must go to Tulum or Cobá. The first are ruins of Maya culture near the white and soft sands of the Caribe and the second one deep in the rainforest.
The typical advices I must said are:
1. Don't ride passing taxis. You could have the bad luck of taking a "pirate" taxi and that's not very good. Always ask for a taxi at your hotel or at a "site" (a place where a lot of taxi are parked and have telephone and a little "housing").
2. Don't get into "dark" streets at night.
3. In México City don't go to "La lagunilla" and "Tepito". If you like a "taste" of Mexico's public transport ONLY use subway "metro" and "Metrobus".

And if you go during lunch time (1pm-3pm) there could be a lot of people so be careful!
4. If a "street salesman" cames to you, and you don't want to buy somthing always say: "Gracias" and continue walking. Sounds strange but is the way here in Mexico.
5. Cancún, Playa del Carmel, Cozumel and the surroundings are very safe and there are a lot of tourism so only take the normal precuations that you would take on your country.
6. If you like to party at night on Mexico City, well I don't know many places (I'm not the party-man kind) but you could go to "La Condesa" or "La Roma".
There are a lot of things to do in Mexico but everything depends of what you like and how are you going to move. If you know a little of Spanish it would be easier but if not, there are always a mexican who would try to improve his English or could try to make you learn a little of "mexican" spanish.
Depending of the date of your travel will be Mexico's weather but expect from a rainy day to a very hot day (weather in the city could be 3 °C or 6 °C on the Morning and maybe 26 °C on the day, on Cancun and surroundings the weather is warm: 12 °C-36 °C).

The colonial cities near Mexico DF are worth a detour. Puebla and Cholula only a few hours by excellent and frequent bus service. Guanajuato takes a few hours more, but you'll see some interesting countryside.
