If a working holiday visa is now out of the question, I would say your best bet is to teach English somewhere. Generally speaking, this is possible just about anywhere in Asia. Find a country that you think you could live in for a bit, do some research, and I can almost guarantee that you will find a way to get a job there.
Keep in mind though that some countries will be better for making money if that is a priority. I think South East Asia or China would be a fantastic experience, but you probably aren't going to come home rich, or have a huge amount to travel with.
Japan is an excellent choice, and teaching there is the best way to get to see one of the most expensive countries in the world. Money is ok - you will make enough to live and travel a bit, but you probably won't save a ton. Still, I would highly recommend it. I was there for a year and broke even when I came home. However, I took trips to Thailand, traveled around Japan every single weekend for the entire year, snowboarded 3 times a week in winter, and spent almost every extra Yen I earned on good food and drinks.
Korea is a probably the most popular choice and it seems there are countless jobs there. I have no experience in Korea, but I get mixed reports about life and money. I have many friends who have come home after a couple months because they hated it, and I have a number of friends who found the right job and are still there 10 years later.
Do some research - there is an infinite amount of websites out there discussing English jobs in Asia.
What age are you exactly? I'm pretty sure you can apply for an Austalian working holiday visa while you are 30, ie right up to the day before your 31st Birthday.
