A year in Australia

Hello everybody,

Are you doing a school project where you have to research what all would be involved in going to Australia for a year, or are you actually planning to go to Australia for a year?

Regardless of the answer to that: To stay in Australia for a year, you need a visa which allows you to do that. Luckily, that's easy: .

Australia is also a pretty expensive country. An average backpacker, staying in hostels, cooking their own meals, and slowly travelling around the country by public transport, spends about AUD $80/day. Unless you're incredibly rich, I'd recommend working to earn money to be able to stay there for a year, rather than looking for purely volunteer work. Though what you could do to "stretch your money" while still doing some 'volunteer' work would be (working on organic farms in exchange for food and a place to sleep).

For hostel prices, check the here on the site. People staying in a city for a longer term while working tend to find a "share house", though, where you basically rent a room in a regular house on a per-month basis, from locals or other travellers, who in turn are renting the house from some landlord.

Also see the (wiki) guide article for some further information to get started.

Hi There,

Have you ever tried couch surfing?

It's an online community where people open their homes to fellow travelers for free with the idea that one day if they are ever on your side of the world you will open up your home in return. I used this twice through America ( and still keep in touch with one of the people I stayed with )and never had any problems but just make sure you are careful and smart about it especially if you will be doing it alone. I had a few seedy people respond to my request or some who bailed on me but just do your research on the person.

Always check the reviews and if you have any doubts whatsoever do not stay there!
