Hey we are currently planning our route from washington to chicago but there seems to be not much options to get there cheap? anybody have any suggestions?
Flights can be found for less than $175. The train and bus are both under $100. That doesn't seem bad for a trip of almost 1,150 km in North America.

Tongue firmly embedded in cheek, I'd say at a conservative pace of 5km per hour and just 7 hours walking per day you should be able to cover the 1150km in around 33 days. But then you'll need thirty-two nights accommodation on the way and possibly a second pair of shoes.
Alternatively try to use this site to find out if anyone with a car (and space) is planning on taking the same route at a similar time and offer to share the petrol. Or, if you're feeling really brave and you like taking risks, hitchhike.
The flight or the train are looking rather enticing now!

There should be reasonably priced flights for Washington to Chicago. Inexpensive trains are also a possibility. Car rentals could cost you more even if you stay at inexpensive motels unless you desire to see things along the way. Traveling in the USA is not as cheap as it may be in other countries but there can be deals to be found.
If you go to "Craigslist" dot com, go to the state then city/area you want to depart and look under the "Rideshare" section. You may find someone going the same direction that would like you to pay half the cost of petrol.
Or you can post your own advert there listing what you're looking for and the particulars of your trip/desires.
You did mean Washington State on the west coast and not Washington D.C. on the east coast?

Yes, I agree with rabudman. The first thing you need to tell us is if you are talking about Washington state (and which city, for example, Seattle) which happens to be on the west coast of the US, or if you are talking about Washington, DC the nation's capitol, which is on the east coast of the US.
I stumbled across this airline when booking a trip to vegas last week www.spirit.com and they have really cheap flights all over the USA. Otherwise try greyhound, it will be slow but It will you where you need to go.

Just to be clear--yes, spirit.com is cheaper than most airlines. It also has the worst rating of any airline flying in the US. The reasons for this are as follows:
(a) they will charge you steep penalties if you show up late for your flight (and by late I mean if you check-in at the gate less than 45 minutes ahead of time).
(b) they try to sell you all kinds of stuff on-board at inflated prices ($10 for a Coca-Cola, $15 for a headset, no problem, how about buying a lottery ticket to see if you can get assigned seating for your next spirit flight)
(c) Think the seating is close on most flight--spirit brings that to a new level (cattle-car seating is what most call it).
(d) need to make a tight connection to another flight--hey, not our problem--especially if it is with another company
(e) will we have you wait around for an extra 90 minutes before we board you--and then change your seat five times (even after being seated)--hey that's our prerogative--and your loss.
Since it appears, jenniemc08, that you haven't taken your flight yet, I suggest you write back after the flight and let us know if you have a better experience than most. I just know my own experience with both ryanair and with spirit. Cheap--absolutely. Worth the hassle--well, that depends.

Thank you for your input, it seems you must have had a bad experience I had actually already taken my flight, roundtrip and experienced no problem with them. They are very similar to the European airline, Ryanair which is widely popular. Yes there are penalties and add-ons if you do not choose the basic fare, but with a nation crying for cheaper airline tickets, you have to expect cuts in areas. You will not get the same service for paying half the ticket price, that just doesn't make sense.
A) I usually give myself more time than that to get through security and to my gate, so I checked in like 1.5 hours before flight time, which is recommend by most airports.
B) I paid $5 for 2 sodas, this seems normal. Perhaps the pricing has changed since you've flown with them. I also was not sold lottery tickets, I was however sold tickets on the Ryanair flights I took in Europe
C) Seating was tight, but you get what you pay for. We upgraded my tall dad to the emergency row and the rest of us were fine
D) Didn't make any connections, so I can't speak to that extent.
e) Boarded 15 minutes late, never changed seats. However, I do know that with a plane their size weight distribution is extremely important. So if the flight isn't full or passengers don't show up, they probably moved you around for your own safety.
I will definitely fly with them again, but I prefer to save money anyway I can. That's my travel style, others might prefer to spend more money for convenience.
