I like to use kayak.com, it searches all other websites (like cheaptickets, etc., as well as airline websites) and has always given me the most choices and the cheapest fares. I heard that the cheapest time to buy is 2 months before your departure. Sounds like a fun trip, good luck!

Ive been travelling for over a year now and I've booked all my flights singly. I have been really lucky in finding some ridiculously cheap airfares. It was really by just keeping a daily check on the airlines websites and buying when I thought they had gotten as low as they could.
For example, I flew with Aer Lingus from Irleand to NYC for 118 euro!!!
The I flew with LanPeru from NYC to Lima for US$360!!
My Santiago to Easter Island flight cost me US$550 with LanCHile (about as cheap as you can get for that flight apparently)
Rio de Janiero to NZ for $1300 with Lan.
And I've just booked a multistop airfare home with STA travel giving me 4 months travel (leaving Aug) for NZD$1800.
Admittedly, there's a LOT of overland travel in what Ive been doing, but that might give you some idea of what you can get.
The concept of pricefighter airlines has done incredible damage to the environment by bringing regular flying in reach of the masses. Personally, I think that if you go fly, you should bleed financially. That's about the only thing that makes the average consumer think twice.
Hey James - I completely agree with bentivogli...many travellers don't think about the impact of their air travel on the wider world.
That said, there are many initiatives that help you reduce your footprint on the earth (for the times when flying is the only practical option). In Australia, we have a fantastic website called GreenFleet () which enables you to buy carbon credits to offset your air travel. You can also do for the emissions from your home and car! They use the money to plant trees and for other programs promoting and developing climate change solutions.
I'd encourage all travellers to purchase carbon credits for air travel or to look at alternative travel options, such as train or boat travel.....

while im not totally oblivious to environmental concerns (i use my recycling bin etc) as a poor 18 year old im really looking for the cheapest options i can find so i dont think ill be buying any of those carbon credit things
use Kayak, Orbitz, Google Flights. Set alerts and buy just in time at the lowest price.
