That itinerary seems do-able cutting it a little close but you could definitely do it if you planed it very carefully. I myself loved the Whitsundays and I went April of last year and it was amazing. i can't put in my two cents in about inland QLD
cause I never went.
but for the Fraser island self drive 4WD group tours is mostly 18-24 year old getting drunk so i wouldn't do one of those with a 2 year old. the group tours in the big buses are hit or miss depending if you stay the night or not . i guess renting a 4WD to your self would bee the best option if you talk to a travel agent or some one about directions and things to see
Hi Katelyn,
Thank you very much for your input.
Actually, we really just want to experience the best Australia has to offer during the 11 days we have after Sydney. We don't neccesarily have to go up to Queensland, it was just what we have thought of until now..
I have done a Fraser tour in a very mixed group and there was even a family with kids on board. Not all small tours are only 18-24, just contact a few companies via the Internet and check out what age groups they normally have, how big the groups are and if they are suitable for small kids. Generally there are no big, big busses on Fraser as it's 4WD-only. I would only recommend the self-driving option if you have experiences in driving a 4WD in soft sand conditions. Some weeks (or months) ago some inexperienced tourists had a bad accident on Fraser. Enjoy your trip.

I would say Fraser Island and the Whitsundays are a must see, if you're comfortable with doing that amount of travel then you'll have a great time!
I've been to Fraser Island in March and the weather was perfect during the day with rain most nights, make sure your accomodation is waterproof! Most of the self hire groups I saw were younger backpackers getting drunk, you might be able to hire a smaller 4x4 (Suzuki Jimni or similar) and have it all to yourself - please drive carefully! Otherwise you could take a 4x4 bus tour which seemed to be geared to families.
