Hi Everyone,
hey how are you so you took an SLR to south America and you was safe with it?? as i have one and was thinking of leaving it home ??
I did take an SLR to South America, but we were not in Buenos Aires (BA) for very long, we just did an overnight stay before going onto Ushuaia to board the ship to Antarctica. In BA, I actually kept my SLR, lenses and iPad in the hotel safe as I am paranoid by nature. In Ushuaia, it is perfectly safe... it is a small town (30,000) and very tourist friendly.

What's the use of having a good camera if you don't take it with you on a trip like that? Just use common sense carrying it (i.e. not in plain view or in a distinctive camera bag, but just in a small backpack or something). have good travel insurance in case something does happen, and don't spend a moment worrying about it beyond that.
I never felt a moment's worry about my camera on my previous trip to Peru with it, and it'll come along as always on my upcoming trip to Chile and Argentina, too.
Carrying an DSLR in Buenos Aires was no sweat at all. Just be alert.
I also went to Antarctica with Quark and agree they were just awesome. In terms of cameras for Antarctica take at least 2 as it's an easy place to kill a camera (and you often will exhaust the batteries and your extras once to twice a day). A DSLR I think is a must down there as is a good pocket camera with a decent zoom.
