First of all I would like to wish you a wonderful trip. As you said that you have around three months so I think that you can easily cover 2-3 countries. It is better to plan for few countries and explore them to the most. This way you can well enjoy your trip. Moreover it is better to travel with someone. But even if you go solo you can meet backpackers in the hostels, join them and learn from their experiences.

three months are good enuf for more than one country... you can go whole south america or australia/nz or south east asia... and visit many places...
travelling alone is fun.. though there are times when u wil be down and will feel like going back but its worth a chance.... and there might be case when you meet up with someone and may plan whole trip with that group/person.. so it depends on ur luck,...

For travelling with somebody keep in mind travel style, what you want to see, time frame, budgets, etc. It's best to travel with somebody who wants similar things out of the experience as you do or by yourself. Don't forget that this is YOUR trip. I would suggest figuring out what you want to do and where you want to go and if your friend wants to join you for all or part of it then they can. That being said, even if you chose to travel with somebody, you don't have to stay together 24/7 and do the same things - you can split up for side trips, etc.
As far as where to go, again it depends on what you want out of the trip, and your destination. For example, you could easily spend 3 months in Canada alone simply because the country is so big and varies from region to region (esp if you wanted to get off the beaten track a little bit). Alternatively, many people spend 6-8 weeks in SE Asia doing the Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia route. These countries are smaller, and take less time. Where you plan on going can dictate time constraints. You should also consider how do you like to travel. Do you like lounging on the beach, or crazy adventures, or??? Do you want to see the tourist sites, or are you more inclined to try to see the country from the perspective of a local? If the latter, you may want to consider volunteer placements or working in a destination.
So, what do you want out of the trip? And how do you like to travel?
I went to Rwanda with a mate (he knew someone out there) and seeing the country from a locals point of view was great, I find it funny/hypocritical how everyone slams the tourist trails yet they are one themselves (thats me all over). So maybe volunteer work maybe more my bag. I liked what you said about going as a pair then going off to do side trips etc, that could work out nicely. I think we are both easy going guys who will go where the wind takes us, ive tried the hyper-organisiational tactic before, but its so much more fun the other way. I'm dying to see asia I have done north america, europe, N/E/central africa. But also south america sounds great. Its just so mind boggling, because the world is literally my oyster, i have no tie downs (apart from one disgruntled girlfriend!) and im determined to make the right choice. I feel like when your playing a computer game you have to finish the last level, so that means seeing the whole world (i appreciate this is impossible but i'd like to try). ==So if you have 3 months where would you go?==
OK, keeping your last post in mind I would probably do:
~4 weeks volunteering somewhere in SA, and then spend the remainder of the time traveling south through much of SA - maybe even get over to Antartica if you can fit it into your budget/schedule.
or
volunteer or teach english in India or SE Asia (thailand?) and travel from there through much of SE Asia and/or China and Nepal depending on where you start.
I would probably combine a short volunteer/work trip into it if you think it's something you'd enjoy, whether at the beginning, in the middle or at the end. Personally, I'd probably keep it at the beginning or end if you want the freedom to go where the wind takes you :P Otherwise, either of these destination routes can be done without it.
On a side note, I find the traveller vs tourist debate a little silly as well. And obviously the tourist sites are tourist sites for a reason!
The last suggestion seems like it would really suit what you might want out of your trip. 3 months in Asia would definitely be 3 months well spent.
I personally loved my solo travel days, which I did as a backpacker. I'm now married and my husband has slightly more expensive tastes so while local transport is still acceptable to him, budget hostels are not! But anyway, what I'm trying to say here is, while you're not travelling with your partner, why not go solo. It offers you a kind of freedom you may not experience otherwise.
