I'm in the same position with vodafone except I will have about £300 to pay off just to cancel my contract.
Pain in the neck but I'm gonna cancel it and get pay as you go for travelling around. Don't want to be tied to direct debit while away and like shorty100 says, I know I'll use it if I've got it especially for internet and email etc. Roaming costs are ridiculous abroad.
Also if you've had the same experience with vodafone as I have, they wont just let your contract run out and stop taking money out of your account...it rolls on for months unless you keep asking to cancel it in store or over the phone and if they can't convince you to upgrade. Better off getting a pay as you go sim and not having the worry I reckon!

Just got back from talking to Carphone Warehouse. The guy I spoke to went to Australia and had the same problem. He suggested to contact Vodafone to change from pay monthly to pay as you go 'Vodafone Passport' it charges 70p for the connection and it covers Australia and probably Bali, but I need to ask if it covers Thailand. Then suggests when I get to Australia to cancel my contract and get an Australian sim and keep my phone as apparently phones are expensive over there.
