The down turn is still affecting Britain. With a million immigrants over the last four years and almost a million illegal immigrants willing to do any job, even well below minimum pay, unless you have something special that employers need it is going to be very difficult to get a job. There will be a lot of other young people travelling to Britain too, looking for jobs as there might be none in their own country.
If not fussy and you can cook it, you can buy food fairly cheap. Transport is expensive. There are any number of reasons why it could cost a lot or not too much. Bring as much money as you can and be careful it is not stolen.
You could start looking on the internet for jobs now in London, to get some idea of what will be available this time next year and what wages to expect. £80 for rent will be a big lump out of it.
Zak, Cyberia is certainly right that you're going to find it difficult to find any skilled work unless you already have that skill. Things are hard here in the job market at the moment. Your best bet might be doing bar or restaurant work or suchlike, particularly as some places up the number of staff they employ for the summer tourist season. It will still be easier for you if you have done it before.
Yes it might be difficult but don't be too down hearted because it's not impossible. In fact if you're looking for work for the short term you may have some luck, so long as it's within bar or cafe work etc... I know people that have moved here recently and found it quite easy to get basic cooking work etc...
Things aren't great here at the moment, especially with the new government dropping the axe on everything, but I'm sure there are worse places to be at the moment. If you've already taken in to account rent costs, and are prepared to do alot of walking (also get an Oyster card for tube and bus travel) you don't have to spend huge amounts. Jst don't expect to be going out to the pubs alot! Drinking is expensive now, and food prices are high.
Check the Gumtree website for jobs.
If you want it enough I'm sure you can make it happen!
Good luck
