Hi there
Fort William is a very popular place to stay with good access to lots of beautiful bits of the Highlands. Personally, I don't particularly like the town itself but you can easily get out on a boat the the small isles (including my favourite island, the Isle of Eigg) or Skye and it is very handy for walking, including Ben Nevis.
Other towns you could base yourself in are Oban (a bit further south than FW, lots of ferries for island days out), Ullapool (a bit further North and good for access to remote bits of the NW Highlands) or even somewhere on Skye (Portree maybe?). I know Skye is an island but it's a big, beautiful and fascinating Island with a bridge to the mainland.
Hi magykal1
Thanks so much for your wealth of information. This was exactly the information I was looking for.
This will prove very handy to me when choosing the accomodation and later on for traveling around.
Cheers
You can't go too far wrong in the Highlands, whether near Fort William or further north. I would probably recommend near Ullapool as there is some amazing scenery on that coast with great beaches (especially near Gairloch) with plenty for families to do (as long as outdoorsy types).
Hope you have fun- if I didn't live up North already, I would come on holiday here!
