Staying connected in Tokyo

Hello:
So I'm going to Tokyo! Excitement aside, I've learned from painful experiences that GPA apps and a way to look up train schedules are absolutely required if you want to go anywhere in that maze of a city. Since my previous plan of WiFi hotspot-hopping was not exactly efficient, (I had to register dozens of accounts, and some hotspots require you to confirm via email before you can connect to check you email...) I was wondering if anyone has experience with buying a pre-paid SIM card or renting a pocket WiFi device in Japan. They all come in different prices and specs, but what I like to know is how stable and reliable the connection actually is. I am staying for six days and will mostly be using the internet for maps and updating facebook.

Not sure about the pre-paid sim card requirement because if you have pocket wi-fi it should connect pretty easily. Last trip in April we had a rental wi-fi point for up to 10 devices for three weeks (about Y10,000, so one week would be cheaper). My friend Alex also travels to Japan reasonably regularly and added a link to my facebook post on the topic.
