Travelling from UK. Thinking of driving but scared of that too!!
You can take eurolines bus from london to budapest (not very comfortable, app 28hrs). From budapest to zagreb by train. From zagreb to vis by bus/train.
Or by train and ferry, lots of changes and probably a fair bit more expensive but more comfortable:
London to Paris by Eurostar
Paris to Rome by TGV
Local train to Ancona
Jadrolinija ferry to Split
Ferry on to Hvar/Vis
You probably shouldn't attempt that trip in one go though. Plan one night in Paris maybe and another night in Rome (or whatever cities / places tickle your fancy). You could also come through Austria and Slovenia. You certainly have a lot of options. Good luck.
You can go driving. It's not that scary anyway. But if you really can't, then try the train. Although I should warn you it takes more time to travel by land than fly.
