Such a thing as free hostel accommodation

Hi All

At least YHA hostels (and probably most others) in Australia regularly have a deal where you get the night's (dorm room) accommodation free in exchange for 2-3 hours of cleaning rooms, yes. You'll need to be there on a visa which allows you to work (most commonly a Working Holiday Visa), and most hostels want a commitment of you staying in town for at least 2-3 weeks (so they don't have to retrain new people constantly). If you meet those qualifications, just enquire at reception if they're currently looking for someone.
I wouldn't expect the same to exist in South East Asia - just because labor costs are that much lower there.

Oh, I just saw in another thread that you're in your 30s, so the WHV won't be available to you, and you'll probably not be allowed to work at all, which includes schemes like this. :/

Ahh thanks Sander

Sadly I will not qualify if you require a WHV as I am over the age limit (hence having to fund my trip without work along the way)

Shame it seems to be so anal as it is basically unpaid work......I never encountered such red tape in the USA despite them being as strict about working visas as Australia

Hey ho! Guess I'll skimp on the Oz leg and spend more time in less expensive destinations!

Thanks anyway!

If you want to stay for free, I'd suggest you try couchsurfing. There are a couple of websites where you can register and find hosts. It's all free, and they don't usually expect you to do chores! ;-)
