Guys

There are heaps of backpackers in Melbourne and Sydney where you will no doubt come across heaps of other travellers who are looking to go places. I am from Melbourne but travelled to Canada on my own and found that its the best way to meet ppl and explore the country.

Dont be nervous Oz is the best country in the world and we welcome backpackers!

Thanks thats nice to hear! Ive heard its friendly so sure il meet alot of people! Im not sure on how much money to take as its ment to be expensive there any advice? Also is there any where ud suggest to go after melbourne i havnt made plans after that.
Thanks

It can be a little expensive in Melbourne but its still cheaper than Sydney. Stay in hostels in St.kilda they are all pretty cheap and nice enough. Its right near the beach too if thats what your into. There are also heaps of pubs and nice places to eat! Just get food you can cook yourself at the hostels which will save you a heap on eating out.

Depends what your into i guess, there is so much to do around Melbourne, there is a really good aquarium and there is always sports going on. I live down the peninsula which is where the best beaches are. Further down from me is Phillip Island which is where there are penguins you can see up close which is pretty cool.

You should drive along the great ocean road which is west of Melbourne and will take you along the coast and is heaps of fun. You could then keep going to Adelaide which is alot quieter and cheaper than our bigger cities but still heaps to do.

Just let us know anything else you need.

Hey Fi,

I live in Melbs. What are your interests and how long do you plan on being here for?
I suggest if you are here in late March to April that you could go see a show at the comedy festival, I try to go a few times every year! From the 15 - 18 March the grand prix is on.. so the city is pretty loud hehe you can hear the cars zooming from miles away. I have never been because I'm not really into car racing but I've heard the entertainment can be good. If you like sport then you could see an Australian rules football game.. there are a few pre season games in March.. of course I'm biased because I love aussie footy. It's a good atomosphere and you could even easily get tickets to a pre season grand final. (Hopefully you could get a game at the MCG which is the biggest Australian Sporting arena).

Other than that Melbourne is great for its live music, food and pub culture.
Just a list of things to do:

Day trip to Yarra Valley wine region
Phillip island (National park and beautiful beaches, penguins and wildlife)
Shopping (bourke st mall, queen vic market)
Royal botanical gardens

As far as areas go:
St kilda (very social and near a beach even if its not a great beach)
Carlton (lots of restaurants)
Brunswick (a little hippy and alternative)
Richmond (lots of good pubs and bars also is right near the MCG, yarra river and botanical gardens).

I wouldn't stress too much on where you stay.. I'd prob like something central like the heart of the city where its easy to jump on a train or tram.

My personal fave place though is the Great Ocean Road where there is beaut beaches and National Parks you can do day tours but considering it only starts about 1.5 hrs from Melbourne you probably wouldn't see much this way. Work permitting if you wanted would happily take you for a road trip if you wanted.

Take care,
Pam.

Hey Fi,

I am also arriving in Melbourne on the 5th March and im on my own...im getting really excited but nervous now and haven't actually booked anywhere to stay.

Maybe we could meet up whilst we are there, at least we would know someone :-)

Hello! I am from the UK but have been living in Melbourne for the last 5 months just working and (trying to) save money for the ext part of my trip. I am planning on leaving March around the 29th March (maybe a couple of days earlier) to make my way to Sydney. I may try and find a months worth of work there and then work my way up the rest of the East Coast up to Brisbane - may try to find some work there and then go up to Cairns and plan the rest of it nearer the time!

If anyone wants to get in touch with me I am more than happy to make new friends as the friends I have here all have different plans to me - hence me being by myself!

Let me know if you want to get in touch! :-)

hi there,

I'm going to melbourne on 12th march on my own. I have a years working visa, hoping to find work and the travel up the east coast. Just gonna go with the flow; never done anything like this before. If anyone is around in melbourne at that time it be great to meet up. Also hoping to go the grand prix if anyone else is thinking of doing that
