I had exactly the same problem when I went to the US last year!
I took a lot of shoes as I am horrible at packing light! I manages to fit everything into my backpack and I took all the shoes you mention!
Where are your from? The reason I ask is that I went over there with so much stuff and then had no room to buy new things. I am from Australia and everything is half the price over there - including shoes!!! I ended up buying an extra suitcase to fit all my shopping in - we flew back to Australia from LA and where allowed 40kg of luggage each (which I only found out at check in) so there is sooooo much shopping that can be done!
So I would suggest taking as little as possible and buying over there because you will want to anyway!

I am from Australia too.... but i am continuing on to move to the UK...
I am thinking that buying shoes over there is a good idea...
but at least i know it will all fit!

I'm here in the States, and I think you'll find that you'll want to buy shoes while you're here. My suggestion would be to pack comfortable heels or flats that can do double duty as dinner shoes and would be suitable with club attire. Don't bother taking up space in your back pack with thongs/ flip-flops; you can get them here at a low cost (Walmart), and then you can decide to take them with you or toss them out when you head south. remember; the less you bring, the more room you have to take stuff home! Welcome to the States, I hope you enjoy your visit!
