I I have altered my homebound flight from Cancun (attending a wedding there) for one month. I was thinking about taking bus to Antigua Guatemala and staying there for the month to unwind, and explore. I have budget of about $1500-2000 usd for the month.
Hi Khandilee,
I am actually in a similar situation - I have to go to a destination wedding at an all inclusive resort in June. ( i am going to do it on the cheap and stay in a hostel and just get a day pass for the resort to avoid resort min 3 days at 386.00 per night.) I am going to visit a friend that lives outside of Panahachel, Guate (Atitlan region) I've already checked out airfare on Taca from Cancun to antigua and to Guat and it's just too cost prohibitive right now.
I did find a site called bamba experience ( based on info on this site). They have organized tours along the route cancun to antigua, and also have a Europass style bus pass where you can hop on / hop off on your schedule. If you've not been to the area, that might be fun to do it that way. I cannot speak directly to reliability, etc though.
I am interested in more direct bus route, so if you find anything , do post back and I'll do the same.

Travelling by bus in Guatemala is slow and hard work because of poor roads in places. I would fly to Guatemala City and get a bus from there to Antigua Guatemala. Flights are best booked very early and before arrival.
Even in Guatemala City I found it very cheap, but very basic, and that was not hostels.
Do try and get to Tikal. I stayed in nearby Flores overnight, which is a nice small town by a lake.

Zena,
I'll update here if I find any good info. BTW, thanks for the inadvertant tip on a 'day pass' at the resort. I didn't know theey offered such things but I am certain to find out if the resort wedding offers this! I too am looking for something much cheaper than the resort for my stay.
I did look into Bamba but was hoping that someone could lead me to the local busses.....still hoping!

Cyberia,
Thank you for the recommendation but I have decided (due to budget) that I want to take the bus. Depending on the length of the trip (If I can find any information), I may add some stop-overs to break up the trip. I have 4 weeks and am not in any hurry (although if I can make it to Antigua for Semana Santa that would be great).
Do you have any information on the busses to share?
