Hi there! Im visiting the US for the first time in May, and im slightly confused as to the best way around the country. I'm flying into New York, but would love to visit California, Florida, Nevada and Washington DC. And then back to London. Could you suggest the best route please? I'll be flying from each place and trying to work out the logistics (so annoying haha)
Also im planning to be in the US for 6-8 weeks with at least 2 in New York, so any help on how long to stay in each place would be SOOOO appreciated!
Well, that's alot of travelling. I would suggest to keep costs down, firstly to use pretty much low cost carriers, so that would be JetBlue, AirTran, Southwest, stay away from Spirit they will nickel and dime you to death, and charge you for the air you breathe while on their aircraft.
I would start by flying NY to Florida, you should fined some good buys either into Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale or perhaps Miami. From there I would fly to California either LA or SF, from LA or SF you can find some good airfares into Las Vegas, from there you might find some decent airfares to DC or if you find less expenisve ones back to NY then go back there and take the train to DC, if you have not purchased your airline ticket yet, you might consider flying into NY and back from DC that might save you a few dollars, or better yet, fly into NY, take the train to DC, from there fly to Orlando, or Ft. Lauderdale, then to Las Vegas and then fly to LA or SF and from one of those two cities fly back to London, this second idea could save you some big $$. Good luck

Haha "charge you for the air you breathe"!! We have an airline here called Easyjet which does the same thing! They haven't started charging per limb yet but they're close!
Thank you so much for this invaluable advice, im getting paid next week and booking ASAP! I seriously am gonna be the happiest most obvious tourist ever but i dont care, i've been waiting for too long! I'll be sure to check out the airlines you suggested!
Would you suggest i book the accom in advance? Im hoping to stay in hostels in New York and LA but i've heard its fine to go for cheap motels in the other places. Im just slightly apprehensive as i've also heard that flights are often delayed?
Also how long should i stay in each place? Im your typical tourist haha interested in all that commercial stuff, but i wouldnt mind exploring some hidden gems! I definitely wanna do 2/3 weeks in NY cos i've been dreaming about it since i was like 5 haha

I know this thread is old but just a bit of advice about NY - DC - Florida bit... It's really cheap to get a megabus from DC-NY and the other way around. I did it for like $8 there and $11 return or something, when I was a student in Virginia, and it only takes about 8 hours, which is well worth the savings you make by not flying that short distance. And flights from DC to Florida, if booked in advance, can be as low as $60, or if left too late can be as high as $300.
As for how long you should spend in DC? About 2 days at most, and even that only depends on if you really life museums. It's interesting and all, to see the Capitol building and the White House and the Lincoln memorial etc, but it can all be done in a day. I lived right outside the city for nearly a year and went there twice to do touristy stuff and only a handful of times for dinner and nights out.
Florida, again it depends on what you want to do. If you want to do the parks then you need at least 2 weeks to fit it in and even then you won't do everything. With Disney World, Epcot, MGM Studios, Animal Kingdom, 2 Universal Parks, Seaworld, Busch Gardens, 2 Disney Waterparks, Wet n Wild, and a whole host of other parks there it is IMPOSSIBLE to do everything so be picky. I would personally not miss Disney's Magic Kingdom and would do at least 2 days there, 1 day in Animal Kingdom, 1 in MGM, skip Epcot, a day in each Disney Water park, 1 day in Sea world, 2 days in Universal (one for each park), skip Busch Gardens. And remember that parks are EXHAUSTING so you need break days in between, and there are at least 2 beaches I'd recommend in the area (Daytona and Clearwater), there's mini golf courses all over the place in Orlando.
Basically, I wouldn't rush Florida. New York will be EXPENSIVE to spend 2 weeks in, and honestly you don't need to. Everything that is there to be seen can be seen in a week. I went for 5 days and I managed to visit the statue of liberty, ellis island, go up the empire state building, the rockafeller centre, go to three museums, central park zoo, take a 4 hour stroll around central park, visit harlem, go to brooklyn, china town, little italy, wall street, the WTC memorial, go to a broadway show, see Times Square both during the day and at night, and see a hockey game. In 5 days. You just need to pack your day full of stuff to do. I literally walked from my hostel all over the city, and saw everything.
Oh and make sure to check out the Columbus Circle Hostel for a cheap place to stay in NY. Most other hostels that were the same price were over in Brooklyn or Queens but this is right by Trump Tower, next to Central Park, and was really not that bad, it's where I stayed.
