Ive done a similar route, but backwards starting in Rangoon and eventually ending in Surat Thani. I stopped off at Khao Sok national park which I highly recommend you do too. You can find pictures of it in my blog
Trying to tell you which bus, which station, what times would be impossible. There are different buses on the same route, ie fast bus, government bus etc, I can tell you I think the journey from Rangoon to Khao Sok ended up taking pretty much 7 hours. And from Khao Sok to Surat Thani was maybe 4.
People in Thailand are plenty friendly and with a bit of patience you can ask enough people to get you on the right bus. It's all part of the experience! There is only one road out of Surat Thani to Takua Pa and only one road from Takua Pa to Rangoon, so eventually you will find someone that can point you in the right direction.
