Nosy question:
Yes I've had my share of travel romances, but usually the people you will meet in backpackers are not going to be nationals of the country you are in. I think romance while traveling is very common. All the ingredients are there. You are relaxed on holiday. You are away from people at home who might disapprove, You are away from home, so no need to worry about how it will pan out in the future, or even the next day!. You are sometimes lonely, and you are often in the sun and horny!
While on the road I dated and had way more romances than I ever had at home. It was great fun spending time with guys from so many different cultures. I even met my (now ex-)husband while travelling.
The backpacker scene is highly conducive to dating and short-term romances for all the reasons Dodger listed. I also agree that you're more likely to meet and date non-Australians while you're there. People don't tend to spend much time in hostels in their own countries.
