considering the shere magnitude of this event, i'd would enjoy hearing some opinions based on past experiences as far as places to stay and basically how to get the most of it.

Never been to the FMP, but perhaps reading some of the might have some useful tips.
Watch your belongings. Pickpockets love drunk foreigners. Overall, it's very safe and a great time. So have fun, have a few drinks, but don`t get so wasted that you let down your guard.
As for accommodation, if you want to go for a few days and party every night (Haad Rin is really a party every night, not just at full moon), then staying on Haad Rin or close to it is best, if you can find a place. But if you are only interested in partying that one night, then trust me, stay far away and catch a boat or taxi to the party. Had Rinn is crowded, dirty, and the music plays well into the morning. You can't escape it if you want to sleep. One of the beaches up north of Koh Phagnan is a good choice. I really enjoyed Thong Nai Pan. Koh Samui is also a good bet. It's not my favorite island in Thailand, but it's a heck of a lot better than Haad Rin. there's tons of boats going back an forth on the night of the party (and probably every night).
I stayed on Thong Nai Pan also. Loved it. 200 baht each way by boat to FMP and back.
