Maybe not such a good time to do the crossing!
AFAIK, the Tongariro Crossing is still closed.
This week's eruption wasn't spectacular, some ash in the immediate area, and a sulphur smell elsewhere only, but volcanoes are unpredictable.
The science boffins are saying there isn't a lot to be concerned about at this stage, but the authorities are still erring on the side of caution.
Yes, the Kiwis are very careful with these things even if they do not really need to be. Pretty cool that there was some activity though, but nothing to write home about.
Spent 3 years living in NZ and lots of time around the central North Island, beautiful place, crossing was a major highlight of the North Island
