New Zealand - 5 wks, 1 campervan...wanting extra travellers

8 weeks until our adventure starts in America before heading to New Zealand...

Best to sort out the campervan before you go. In busy times they can run short of vehicles, particularly in high season like when you are going, so you end up having to shop around and maybe take one you don't really want.

They generally come in 2, 3, 4 or 6 berth and the bigger, the more the price goes up so you are not saving money by having more people go with you. They also become larger so you will have trouble driving them in and parking them in cities. Also roads are often single lane in NZ so a smaller vehicle makes life easier. Such vehicles are also gas guzzlers.

The most basic campervan starts from about NZ$125 a day, and that is dropping it off in the same city you pick it up. One way rentals can really add to the charges.

I suppose they use the same system with camper vans as cars, where you drive to the ferry, drop your vehicle off, go across as a foot passenger and when you arrive at the other island, there is another vehicle waiting for you, so saving you money. But do check on this with the hire company.

I have driven around both islands twice and there is a lot to see there (many miss out the north island for some reason).

Get yourself a good road map of NZ, and seriously consider a Lonely Planet guide to NZ which will have on hand all the information you will need for your trip there.

The NZ traffic police take their job seriously (and hand out LARGE on the spot fines) and there are speed cameras in NZ, particularly Auckland, so drive carefully.

Do not take any food into NZ for your trip.

Just came back from the north island! Me and my boyfriend had a 4 berth motor home which was comfortable and spent two weeks going from Auckland to as south as Mt Ruapehu and then back again.
Had so much fun and plenty to do! Check out Lake Taupo and black water rafting through glow worm caves in Waitomo.

Also if you were to plug in for the night at a holiday park and still wanted to go into town for dinner, without having the hassle of driving the motor home taxis are really cheap! The most we paid was $10-$12.

Have fun

Hello,
It might be a bit late, but we are wondering if you are still looking for some travel-compagnies?
We are a couple from the Netherlands and we will arrive the 29th of December 2012 in
Auckland as well. We would like to travel by campervan the first two weeks of January to see
the Northern Island. If you are interested, please contact us!
Kind Regards,
Yael & Tom
