It all depends on whether you have one or two months! In one month I have doubt as to whether you could fit in Uluru, Melbourna and Cairns! Australia isn't a country - it's a continent!
All I know is that a visit to Uluru (and even more impressive than Uluru I think, Kata Tjuta) and King's Canyon is well worth it. Uluru has its own airport as well, which you might want to look at (I think its airport code is AYQ) although I suspect flights there are even more expensive than to Alice Springs! We drove all the way up from Melbourne in a campervan which was pretty amazing. Melbourne is also a great city. I'm leaving the rest of Oz to explore in coming years - since I'm moving to Tasmania in 2 months' time this should be a bit easier!
