For normal maps simply Google, there's lots of choices.
For way off the beaten path maps (with few exceptions) they don't exist.

The best thing is to buy maps in each country. Otherwise you will be carrying a lot of maps. Most good bookshops in cities will have them, sometimes specifically for trekking. Mark your route on the map as you go and then post it back home. It's as good as a diary!
I wondered if they were avalaible for sale inside the countries. Alright that's what I am looking for. I wish there was a way to obtain them now so I could better map out my plan. But this will be better than nothing. Thanks again!
I may not supposed to post this in the same thread but does anyone know how hard it is to cross borders? Along with that I was thinking about taking a small pistol for safety does anyone have advice on this?
Absolutely not to the pistol. It will be illegal to carry it in most places and you won't get it across borders anyway. Many countries have laws on knives as well.
By "easy to cross borders" do you mean time, paperwork? Some take longer than others because they are very busy. For some you might need a visa. At some you can't take fresh food in. So do your due diligence.
The only really good map shop I know is in London, Stanford's. They do online sales, but you could probably find a similar shop in your country by googling around.

Marcus, most non-American posters will absolutely cringe at that statement... that would be a HUGE mistake that could potentially get you into so much trouble it's indescribable. The whole gun thing is one American attitude that you will have to leave at home.

That's exactly the information I was looking for. Thank you for the early heads up I appreciate it. I will take your advice. For the most part I was wanting to stay night by night on the land if possible. Do you know if this is possible to do inside national forests or anything. I would love to get to know as much of this before hand to gauge my expenses. Sorry if I continue to question you two. Thank you so much already. You could have saved me a lot of headaches.
Are you planning on camping a lot? For a first-time inexperienced traveller hostels and cheap hotels offer budget accommodation and sometimes great travel resources in the form of local knowledge/advice and of course your fellow travellers can be a superb source of information as well.

If I can find the places to camp I always prefer doing that. I was in new Mexico and went through Arizona and also California for almost two mo the and stayed in a hotel I think twice. But the tip about Hostels will be greatly used. Thanks again!

On the gun topic, is it the same for traveling in Mexico? I've read about how dangerous even driving through Mexico can be, especially for women. Is there truth to that?
