October 1 in China

There a hostel called"101客栈" in the downtown in the hutong, it's nice one. They also have a nice cafe in the hostel . Also close to subway station "dong si". You can find them on Internet . I think it's good for you.
Best wishes

Sorry I forgot say the hostel is in Beijing .

Hey
I live in Wuxi, near Shanghai and last October National Day holiday, I just spent a few days in Nanjing... Not too far away but was a last minute decision.

We had to buy first class tickets on the train because we booked too late (and even that was 3 days before we travelled) luckily, we stayed with a friend so didn't have to book a hotel. I have to say that the train station and the "tourist" spots were an absolute nightmare in terms of quantities of people.

I would advise making you choice and booking everything you can early. I know the train tickets you can only buy about a week in advance but just allow a bit of extra time to work your way through the crowds.

I've also spent a National Holiday in Shanghai, which surprisingly was not as busy, thinking that most people leave the city on a national holiday. I know a few nice places to stay in Shanghai if your interested?

I know it doesn't answer your question about where to actually go, but hopefully that might help a little,

Red,

I think during the first week of October we will still be much more south than Shanghai (we are flying into Hong Kong late September). However we will be going to Shanghai eventually. I'd still like to know of the nice places to stay, although we will very much be on a small budget.

Thanks

There are several hostels that I stay at in Shanghai that are great.

City Central international hostel in Putuo District is clean and sufficient. The. Staff are helpful and they offer a free breakfast and have a nice bar area for relaxing. It's a little out of town if you are getting taxis, but while the metro is running its only 5 mins walk from the metro station.

Captain Hostel Fuzhou Road, it's nice and in the centre of the city and has a great rooftop bar.

Le tour youth hostel, again in the city and quite pleasant. Only stayed here once but could still recommend.

Out of these City Central is my fav but can cost a bit in taxis if you are alone, better to share a taxi or grab the metro if its open

All cost around 70rmb a night (sometimes less if its off season)

Hope that helps

Red x

We often travel during that holiday, typically we have found that while transport bookings are often full, it is a fun time to be out and about in China as everyone is in a good mood with the holiday feel.

Weather wise it is also a good week to be travelling - just before the cold winter sets in!!
