Planning a trip to Europe this summer, need advice, tips, help

Hey everyone, I'm 19, male and in college, hoping to travel to Europe this summer but need a little help and advice from people who have been before or who know more then me. After airfare my budget is around 1200-1500 dollars, give or take a few hundred. I'm also hopping to spend 2-3 weeks in Europe. From what I've heard rail passes are the way to go because I want to do 2 countries (Ireland & UK), and I'm okay with staying in hostels and living as cheaply as possible, so any tips or advise at all to help achieve that or just advice in general would be loved!!! (Also one of the points I'm unsure of is the expense of food, as is whats the cheapest way to eat in europe?)

Are you just staying in the UK and Ireland or are you also travelling across to continental Europe too? If you are just in the UK and Ireland you could also try looking at buses for travelling around as they can be cheaper than the trains - try Megabus - they only go between major cities but are very cheap. For hostelling in the UK you could look into whether it is worth becoming a member of the YHA as that could save you money - but would depend on how much you use them and save with them. The cheapest way to eat would be self catering which would be possible in hostels - buy your food from supermarkets (Tesco and Asda for example).

You can travel really cheap around England, Scotland and Wales. You get the National Express Coaches. They go everywhere around the country and stop at all the city centres and airports. I got the coach from Liverpool to Manchester airport last August and it cost £8.
To go from Liverpool to London its about £15 to £20 one way.
Train travel is expensive in England unless you book online quite a while prior to departure. Google Virgin Trains and use www.google.co.uk to do your search.
But the £15 coach trip from Liverpool to London could cost £80 if you show up and buy a ticket there and then. Cheaper at the weekend
As for food, it depends what you want to eat but fast food is very cheap and McDonalds etc. When you get fed up eating that plenty of pubs do meals which are a cheaper alternative than restaurants.
If you are planning mainland Europe, you can still do the coach journeys which are called Euroline. This would save on a few nights accomodation because you will spend overnight on them. Can be uncomfortable though, also there is cheap airlines go around Europe for not that much more. I am flying Liverpool to Amsterdam in Feb and its only £114 return for 2 of us. Google Easyjet and Ryanair
Message me if you need any more information.
Not to up on the hostels, when Ive gone anywhere in the UK I've always used cheap hotels or BB's. Tip for London. Don't be too bothered to look for a hotel a bit outside London but make sure it is well situated to an underground line. Then you can buy a day travel pass for the underground and be in central London in no time. Will save loads than staying central.
Have a great time!

@ billyboyo3, I plan on staying in ireland and the uk. It may change, i'm still looking into maybe traveling a bit into eastern Europe, but as of right now it'll just be those two places, but I'll definitely be looking into megabus and buses!
@travelisgreat Thanks for all the input, that's exactly the kind of thing I was needing, I'll be checking out all those options and compare em all and see which is best suited for me!
Thanks again everyone! This all just makes me just that much more excited!
