Honestly Roy, I think you're excited over nothing. Yes, it's frustrating to have scams always around you but with a little experience and street smarts 95% of them are instantly negated.
And if you think that going to South America and Africa will somehow magically remove you from the scams in SE Asia then you are sadly mistaken. You are a rich foreigner travelling through poor countries, that brings the responsibility of having scams attempted. It's a simple fact of life.
Thank your lucky stars that you somehow won the genetic lottery and were born/raised in a situation that allows you to travel - billions of your fellow human beings weren't so lucky. You have the chance to experience things that they can only dream about.

Pity the poor mugs who come from far and wide to visit London - my home town - and get bled dry at every turn. Maybe not a scam but nearly as bad. Cash fare for any Tube journey in zone 1? £4.50 (yes, yes I know about Oyster cards). Basic ticket on the London Eye? £17. London is full of expensive and frankly cr*p "attractions" like Madame Tussaud's and the London Dungeon. I'd much rather get "scammed" for two dollars by a taxi driver who earns in a month what I do in a day than wander round London as a tourist and get legally cleaned out.
It's up to you whether to let these things get to you. I've seen some people ruin things for themselves by working themselves into a lather over what amounts to five or ten bucks. Why? And, as CheersT says you are sadly deluded if you think there are no scams in South America. I've just spent 15 months there and there are PLENTY!
Chill out and enjoy your travels - minor annoyances are part of the experience!
