Hi my fiancee and I currently live in ibiza spain, but we want a change I have a few friends who have travelled Australia on a whv for a year or two, and we have decided to do the same starting december 2013. I was hoping to get as much information for people on here as well as researching as much as I can online.
We will have 5000 euors which is about 6000 australian dollars, after visa's and flights, we would like to spend a few nights in Sydney for new year, then head straight to Griffith which is a large fruit picking town, any tips on the following points would be amazing and very much appreciated.
a) how long before we travel do i need to arrange the visa's?
I'd take care of it a month or two in advance, though really anytime between now and a week or two before you intend to leave would work. WHVs tend to be issued within a day, though can take up to a week to be processed at times. You can enter Australia within one year from the date the visa has been issued. (This doesn't affect how long it stays valid for.)
d) dorm rooms v private rooms as a couple we would prefer private rooms but i'm guessing they will be too expensive in some places am i right?
Currently travelling around Australia myself, and doubles seem to be clocking in at around AUD $80 per night nowadays (versus $25-$30-ish for beds in dorm rooms). Might be that prices in fruit picking areas are different, though.
I've never gone fruit picking myself, so can't really comment much about your other questions. I will note that the current exchange rate is making Australia way more expensive than it used to be; prices are only slightly cheaper than they are in the most expensive parts of Europe. Anything extra you can save up before you leave would be very good.
thanks for replying can you suggest any other types of work that are available to backpackers?
General office work and working as a waiter/waitress (especially if you have experience) tend to be the most popular types of backpacker work outside of fruit picking, I suspect. There's also high demand in Australia for people working in IT, construction and nursing, so if you happen to have experience in one of those fields, that tends to make finding work quite easy.
