Okay, so I'm planning to visit the States later this year (October) and I was wanting any advise I can get on LA.
IMHO Santa Monica is Pier is the highlight of that trip.
It looks like your about 5 days there or so.
Theme parks are cool but can be rather disappointing (and annoying).
I would recommend using the dough to rent a car and hit a near by national park for a day or two. Or even just go to big bear. Nothing beats Americas natural wilderness. Or if your really courageous go to Sequoia National Park. You won't be disappointed. Quite a long drive but worth every mile.

You will be disappointed in Los Angeles - California has far nicer places to see (I suggest San Francisco, Monterey Peninsula and Yosemite NP). You will need a car except in SF (where a car is a pain in the rear!)
In my book SF gets a ****** rating, and LA gets a ** rating
(San Diego is rather nice with a ***** rating)
Spend time in LA, but make sure you realize that the downtown area of LA is mostly a dump (I lived in the LA area over 30 years and even worked at LA City Hall for awhile, so I know the area well enough to speak from experience). Now I've lived in northern California for 15 years so I know this area well also.
Disneyland is fine, and I like Universal Studios, but the highlights are the beach areas--Santa Monica, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, or Venice Beach;--although it should be realized that these are most popular in the June through September timeframe, and not as popular during the other months as the temperature drops a bit. Other things are to do are to visit a TV show and watch them film an actual show, or go see the La Brea Tar Pits, or go to the Getty Museum--or my favorite, visit the Huntington Museum and Gardens (near Pasadena).
I agree with Daawgon that if you have the time, the best thing to do is to spend a short time in LA, a little longer in SF, and most of the time driving one of the routes between the two cities. The three choices are the wine route (US Hwy 101) or coastal route (state Hwy 1) or national park and gold rush route (Interstate Hwy 5 to state Hwy 99 to state Hwy 41 heading north, then over to Sequoia and Yosemite NPs, then state Hwy 49 north, then west on Hwy 16 to Sacramento and Interstate Hwy 80 west to SF).
