I'm dreaming of going to Indonesia this summer, but have just 2 weeks if I do, and a very tight budget. I'd rather not see Bali, Gili and Lombok (I'll save them for a later trip). Maybe Sumatra, Kalimantan or Sulawesi? I'll start in Jakarta, so I'll probably visit places in Java, as well. Any suggestions?
In 2 weeks you can make the complete crossing of Java from west to east:
Jakarta, Bogor, Volcano Tangkubam Prahu, Pangandaran, Cilacap, Jodjakarta (you must stay several days there to see Borobudur & Prabanam temples), then east to Bromo volcano and finaly Surabaya.
You can also skip west of Java, going directly to Jodjakarta area and Bromo, then take a flight to Sulawesi.
There, its depends what you like. For great diving spot, flight from Surabaya to Manado, for traditional culture, flight to Ujung Pandang and go to Rantepao, the Toradjas area.
Have fun

Thanks, Alain. I was thinking of taking a ferry to Sulawesi, not just to save money but also for the experience. Have you tried the ferries in Indonesia? What do you think?
I'd prefer to visit the south of the island, and see the traditional cultures there. I'm not a diver, although I do enjoy a nice beach!
Sure , it wil be a great experience, but take care, it seems there is no regular dayly departure. By ship it takes between 24h and 28h between Surabaya and Makassar !
Look at Pelni ships schedules (www.pelni.co.id)
what kind of trip are you interested in? If it's nature, hit Sulawesi and borneo for orang utan, komodo island for komodo, anything on the east of bali and Lombok is good.
if it's historical stuff, java has the most places with Borobudur, all the temples and colonial era
You should have to see Bali. It is very intresting place and it wil be a great experience for you. Have fun.!!
I've seen a lot of Buddhist temples, so I'd like to see some cultures that are different. That's why I was thinking of Sulawesi. Also, I'd like to see some lush nature.
Are there any shots I should get, if I go? Is Malaria a problem?
